ABSTRACT The production of L-carnitine by racemic fission of D,L- carnitinenitrile salts, in particular of D,L- carnitinenitrilechloride, using fission reagents that are optically active, separation of the diastereomeres, reduction of the diastereomeres that contain the L-carnitinenitrile to a salt of an acid that is not optically active, and saponification of the L-carnitinenitrile salt, this leading to a high yield and high enantiomere purity if N-acetyl-L- proline is used as the fission reagent. When this is done, the (LL)-diastereomere is separated from the diastereomere mixture in crystalline form, and a second fractionating crystallisation stage, which has been customary up to this time, is eliminated.
