A process for the recovery of magnesium oxide from a source containing magnesium salts, said process including the steps of : (a) adding an alkali and sulfur dioxide to the source containing magnesium salts, in a leach step to form a magnesium bi-sulfite containing leachate; (b) separating the insoluble materials from the leachate; (c) stripping excess sulfur dioxide from the leachate and precipitating the magnesium as solid magnesium sulfite hydrate; (d) separating the solid magnesium sulfite hydrate from the magnesium depleted leachate; and (e) calcining the solid magnesium sulfite hydrate and recovering the magnesium as magnesium oxide.

La présente invention concerne processus de récupération d'oxyde de magnésium à partir d'une source contenant des sels de magnésium, ce processus comprenant les étapes suivantes: (a) ajout d'un alcali et de dioxyde de soufre à la source contenant des sels de magnésium dans une étape de lixiviation de façon à former un lixiviat contenant du bisulfure de magnésium, (b) séparation des matériaux non solubles du lixiviat, (c) strippage du dioxyde de soufre en excès du lixiviat et précipitation du magnésium sous forme d'hydrate de sulfure de magnésium solide, (d) séparation de l'hydrate de sulfure de magnésium solide du lixiviat appauvri en magnésium et, (e) calcination de l'hydrate de sulfure de magnésium solide et récupération du magnésium sous forme d'oxyde de magnésium.
