ABSTRACT A process is described for producing methyl tert.-butyl ether from butane-containing light hydrocarbon mixtures. The n-butane is isomerised to isobutane which is dehydrogenated to an isobutene/isobutane molar ratio of 0.4 to 2:1, etherified with methanol to form methyl tert.-butyl ether and the residual isobutane recycled to the dehydrogenation. After the isomerisation the n-butane and isobutane are separated and the n-butane recycled. The product containing methyl tert.-butyl ether can be used as a benzine additive.
