ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE The invention provides for the production of aqueous extracts of low fat- and other contamenant content which hinder further phases of the production, with extremely high heparin content. The process is effected by subjecting a heparin-enriched, amorphous grannular, retentive raw material of 90-95 weight % dry substance content and of large specific surface to intermittent or continuous counterflow extraction with a salt solution in the temperature range and at the pH value specified optionally for the given processing system and raw material. During the counterflow extraction in contrast with the extracts of 20-40 ml heparin concentra- tion produced so far, heparin-containing aqueous extracts of minimum 120 NE/ml (NE= international unit) activity can be produced, from which the heparin can be isolated by contin- uous processing. Particularly favouable is continuous counter- flow extraction in a U-extractor divided into cells. The advantage of the process is that the programmed variation of the various parameters is not necessary in the extraction, the heparin concentration of the extracts is high, the volum- etric capacity of the equipment is reducible, and the degree of utilization can be improved. Furthermore due to the more selective extraction, implementation of the further phases of the production is more efficient.
