A process for the production of an olefin from a hydrocarbon, which process comprises: contacting the hydrocarbon and a molecular oxygen-containing gas with a catalyst under auto-thermal conditions sufficient to produce the olefin, wherein the catalyst comprises a component (a) and a component (b) wherein component (a) is at least one metal selected from the group consisting of Group IIIA, Group IVA, Group VA and the transition metals and component (b) is at least one transition metal wherein said catalyst (i) comprises palladium and/or platinum at a total concentration of 0 to 1 wt% inclusive or (ii) is substantially free of palladium and/or platinum added independently of the other metal components. Preferred catalysts comprise rhodium/tin, rhodium/copper and cobalt/tin.

L'invention concerne un procédé de production d'une oléfine à partir d'un hydrocarbure, ledit procédé consistant à mettre en contact l'hydrocarbure et un gaz contenant de l'oxygène moléculaire avec un catalyseur dans des conditions auto-thermiques suffisant à la production de l'oléfine. Le catalyseur renferme un composé (a) et un composé (b), le composé (a) représentant au moins un métal sélectionné parmi le groupe comprenant les groupes IIIA, IVA, VA et les métaux de transition, et le composé (b) représentant au moins un métal de transition. Ledit catalyseur (i) renferme du palladium et/ou du platine à une concentration totale comprise entre 0 et 1 pour-cent en poids inclus ou (ii) est exempt de palladium et/ou de platine ajoutée indépendamment des autres composés métalliques. Des catalyseurs préférés contiennent du rhodium/de l'étain, du rhodium/du cuivre et du cobalt/de l'étain.
