ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE: Polyphenylene oxide is a valuable thermoplastic polymer blended with polymers and copolymers of styrene. It is obtained by means of the oxidative polymerization of 2,6- xylenol. However, prior homogeneous phase processes suffer from viscosity problems, while prior heterogeneous processes involve uneconomic batchwise production modes. A process for the production of polyphenylene oxide which overcomes these difficulties involves the oxidative polymerization of 2,6-xylenol, with either oxygen or a gas containing molecular oxygen, in the presence of a catalyst, by continuously operating in a circulation system, and with the precipitation of the polymer in the liquid reaction medium.
