Abstract In the production of sulphur dioxide by roasting iron pyrites in a fluidized bed reactor, cooling with optionally drying the reaction gases, the improvement which comprises introducing the iron pyrites into the fluidized bed reactor in the form of a suspension of flotation pyrite in sulphuric acid. Advantageously the weight ratio of flotation pyrite to sulphuric acid solution ranges from about 3:1 to 1:1 and contains at least one of a metal sulphate, organic compounds and a carbon-containing fuel, The particle size of the flotation pyrite is less than about 0.1 mm and the sulphuric acid-iron pyrites suspension is introduced into the fluidized bed reactor by blowing with air,
