Disclosed is a process for producing a synthesis gas by reacting a carbon-containing organic compound with steam and/or carbon dioxide using a catalyst whose carbon deposition activity is considerably suppressed. The catalyst is characterized in that it comprises a carrier formed of a metal oxide, and at least one catalytic metal selected from rhodium, ruthenium, iridium, palladium and platinum and supported on the carrier, in that the catalyst has a specific surface area of 25 m2/g or less, in that the electronegativity of the metal ion of the carrier metal oxide is 13.0 or less and in that the amount of the catalytic metal is 0.0005-0.1 mole %, in terms of metal, based on the carrier metal oxide.

L'invention concerne un procédé de préparation d'un gaz de synthèse qui consiste à faire réagir un composé organique contenant du carbone avec CO2 et/ou avec la vapeur en utilisant un catalyseur dont l'activité de précipitation de carbone est ramenée à une valeur très basse. Le catalyseur, qui comprend un support fait d'un oxyde de métal, sur lequel est placé au moins un métal catalyseur sélectionné parmi les rhodium, lutécium, iridium, palladium et platine, est caractérisé en ce que la surface spécifique du catalyseur ne dépasse pas 25 m<2>/g, que l'électronégativité de l'ion métallique dans l'oxyde de métal du support est inférieure ou égale à 13,0, et que la quantité de métal catalytique qu'il supporte est comprise entre 0,0005 et 0,1 % en moles de métal exprimés par rapport à l'oxyde de métal du support.
