PROCESS FOR THE PRODUCTION OF TETRONIC ACID ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A process is disclosed for the production of tetronic acid from a 4-chloroacetoacetic ester. The 4-chloroacetoacetic ester is converted by chlorination into the corresponding 2,4-dichloro- acetoacetic ester. The latter is converted by thermal treatment at a temperature of 110° to 160°C. into 3-chlorotetronic acid. Then the 3-chlorotetronic acid is converted into tetronic acid by hydration by means of hydrogen in the presence of a platinum metal catalyst.
