A B S T R A C T The specification describes a new process for the production of tobacco foils from tobacco binder and solvents and an apparatus for carrying out this process. In the process dry tobacco and dry binder are initially mixed. Organic solvents are then admixed with the exclusion of air. After mixing and swelling has taken place, water is admixed with simultaneous comminution and granulated material which is formed from the final mixture is rolled out between rolls to form a foil, whereafter the solvent which still remains is removed from the foil as produced. The apparatus for carrying out this process is characterized by a mixer which consists of centri- fuging and kneading tools and a separately driven beater cutter head rotating at high speed in the mixing drum with the axis of rotation of the head extending radially of the mixer drum axis. The mixer in the apparatus empties onto a travelling silo bottom, which in turn transports granulated material into the gap of a pair of entry rolls. A foil delivery roll conveys either closed web or foil strips into a transverse cutter. The closed web or foil strips are then dried by a drying arrangement.
