G16-214 PROCESS FOR THE PULPING OF LIGNOCELLULOSIC MATERIAL WITH ALKALI AND QUINONES OR HYDROQUINONES ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A process is provided for the alkaline pulping of lignocellulosic material with sodium hydroxide as the active alkali, which is capable of producing pulp in a yield and quality quite comparable with sulfate pulp. The process is a two stage process, without defibration between the two stages, and comprises subjecting lignocellulosic material such as wood to a first pulping stage at a temperature within the range from about 145° to about 200°C in a pulping liquor comprising sodium carbonate and/or sodium bicarbonate while removing carbon dioxide generated in the pulping stage, and then continuing the pulping without an intervening defibration at a temperature within the range from about 145° to about 200°C in a pulping liquor comprising sodium hydroxide and a quinone or hydroquinone compound.
