ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE: In a process for purifying crude anthraquinone obtained by the oxidation, with molecular oxygen in an aqueous alkali metal hydroxide solution, of an adduct obtained by the Diels-Alder reaction of butadiene with 1,4-naphthoquinone obtained by the catalytic vapor phase oxidation of naphthalene, the improvement in which said crude anthraquinone is subjected to oxidation treatment in an aqueous medium in the presence of a hypochlorite.
