ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE This invention is concerned with improvements in the purification of flue gases and other waste gases which contain sulphur dioxide wherein the gases are washed with a circulating aqueous liquid containing calcium carbonate and/or calcium hydroxide for the separation of calcium sulphate and other difficultly soluble or insoluble materials. In order to improve the amount of sulphur dioxide removed from the waste gas, a circulating washing liquid of the kind mentioned above has added to it calcium oxide and chlorine ions.
