A process for the purification of insulins and insulin derivatives by chromatography in aqueous, buffered sol- vents which contain water-miscible organic solvents, on lipophilically modified silica gel, is described, wherein the aqueous, buffered solvents contain zwitterions, or the pH of the solvent mixture is in the vicinity of the isoelectric point of the insulin or insulin derivative to be purified and zwitterions are present.
