ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE N-acetyl-D(L)-.alpha.-carboxylic acids are thermally racemized by melting them down, by adding a small amount of acetic anhydride to the melt and then heating them to a temperature being between the melting temperature and approximately 210°C until the race- mization is practically complete, whereupon the melt is chilled with an aqueous alkali metal hydroxide or ammonia solution. The residence time required for the complete racemization depends on the heating temperature of the melt such that the higher the heating temperature the shorter will be the residence time.
