A process for the reactive extraction of levulinic acid from an aqueous mixture comprising levulinic acid, wherein the aqueous mixture is contacted with a liquid esterifying alcohol, which alcohol has at least four carbon atoms and is substantially water-immiscible, at esterification conditions in the presence of a catalyst at a temperature in the range of from 50 to 250 ~C, to form a levulinate ester, wherein the amount of alcohol is such that the liquid alcohol extracts the ester from the aqueous mixture and an aqueous phase comprising the catalyst and having a reduced levulinic acid content and an organic phase comprising alcohol and levulinate ester is formed.

L'invention concerne un procédé pour l'extraction réactive d'acide lévulinique à partir d'un mélange aqueux comprenant de l'acide lévulinique. Le mélange aqueux est mis en contact avec un alcool d'estérification liquide. L'alcool présente au moins quatre atomes de carbone et est sensiblement non miscible dans l'eau, dans des conditions d'estérification, en présence d'un catalyseur, à une température comprise entre 50 et 250 ·C, pour former un ester de lévulinate. La quantité d'alcool est telle que l'alcool liquide extrait l'éther à partir du mélange aqueux et une phase aqueuse comprenant le catalyseur et présentant une teneur en acide lévulinique réduite, et qu'une phase organique comprenant de l'alcool et de l'ester de lévulinate se forme.
