A process for removing heat stable alkanolamine salts from an alkanolamine sorbent employed in gas conditioning for the removal of acid gases from a gas stream wherein the heat stable alkanolamine salts are formed during thermal regeneration of the alkanolamine sorbent. In the process, the lean regenerated amine sorbent solution is fed to an electrochemical cell comprising a housing which is separated by an anion exchange membrane into an anode and a cathode compartment, wherein the anode compartment contains a platinum coated, platinized or iridium oxide coated anode and the cathode comprises an expanded metal metal plate cathode. The anode compartment contains an aqueous anolyte solution of an alkali metal salt which is capable of reacting with the anions of the heat stable alkanolamine salts, and withdrawing from the cathode compartment a lean amine sorbent. The process is an effective way to maintain the overall efficiency of the amine with respect to regeneration of the amine sorbent for reuse in the absorbing process and distinguishes from conventional processes in which the amine sorbent solution is transported to a caustic treater wherein the salts are decomposed to their respective amine and salt components. Such processes are time consuming, not readily adaptable to field operation on site, and relatively expensive.
