A B S T R A C T A process for the recovery of petroleum products and bitumens from tar sands in which the tar sand is mixed with a minor amount of reagent consisting of a mixture of trichloro-iso-cyanuric acid and a chlorine donor compound dispersed in a hydrocarbon solvent whereupon on agitation of the resulting mixture in an aqueous medium, the oil and bitumen content of the tar sand is substantially completely released from the sand, silt and solid carbon components thereof, and is amenable to separation and collection.
