A process for the reductive dehalogenation of halogenated aromatics. The process comprises reacting halogenated aromatics with sodium or calcium in the presence of a lower alcohol selected from the group comprising methanol, ethanol or isopropanol and mixtures thereof in order to convert the halogenated aromatics to hydrogenated aromatics. The halogenated aromatics are preferably reacted with sodium in the presence of methanol under reaction conditions whereby said sodium is in molten form. The preferred starting sodium/methanol/halogen molar ratio ranges from 30-40/15-20/1. The process is particularly useful for dechlorinating polychlorinated biphenyls found in electrical transformer oil.
Méthode pour la déshalogénation réductrice d'aromatiques halogénés. La méthode consiste à faire réagir des aromatiques halogénés avec du sodium et du calcium en présence d'un alcool inférieur, choisi parmi le méthanol, l'éthanol, l'isopropanol et des mélanges de ceux-ci, de façon à convertir les aromatiques halogénés en aromatiques hydrogénés. On fait préférablement réagir les aromatiques halogénés avec du sodium en présence de méthanol, dans des conditions de réaction où ledit sodium se trouve à l'état fondu. Comme rapport molaire sodium/méthanol/halogène de départ, on privilégie les valeurs 30-40/15-20/1. La méthode est particulièrement utile pour la déchloration des polychlorobiphényles de l'huile des transformateurs électriques.
