ABSTRACT A method of removing residual carbon from solid surfaces, such as metal or glass, by contacting the surface with sulfur trioxide, either alone or as part of a fluid system, where the fluid can be a gas such as dry air or nitrogen, or a non-aqueous liquid such as a chlorinated hydrocarbon solvent, and there- after rinsing the surface. The surface may be subse- guently contacted with a passivating solution. This method provides a clean, chemically homogeneous surface desired for many surface treatments. 27,675A-F
