PROCESS FOR THE REMOVAL OF SULFUR OXIDES FROM EXHAUST GASES USING SLURRY OF RED MUD CONTAINING CALCIUM ION Abstract of the Disclosure The specification discloses a process for the removal of sulfur oxides from exhaust gases by absorption using a slurry of red mud containing calcium ions. The following steps are carried out: (1) contacting an exhaust gas containing sulfur oxides at a temperature not higher than about 100°C. with a slurry of red mud containing calcium ions obtained from the next step (2) to absorb sulfur oxides in the gas until the pH of the slurry is in the range of 4.3 to less than 6 while maintaining the molar fraction of SO4 to the total SO2 in the slurry at the said pH range at 0.05 to 0.7; and then, (2) contacting the treated gas with a fresh slurry of red mud containing calcium ions to absorb further sulfur oxides in the gas, while maintaining the concentration of NaHSO3 in the slurry at not more than about 8 g/?. The process can achieve a very efficient rate of sulfur oxides removal and a high leaching yield of soda from the red mud, without resulting in scale formation in the absorption equipment.
