Summary The invention concerns a process for removal or reduction of gaseous contaminants, especially SO2, SO3, HCl and HF, from flue gases through chemisorption, whereby a solid, fine-grained sorbent is treated by steam in a reactor before being brought into contact with the flue gas; by the sorbent before entering the reactor being brought to a temperature of preferably 10 to 50°C below the dewpoint of steam in the reactor; and by the sorbent being brought into contact in the reactor with steam of a temperature not higher than 60°C above, and preferably 10 to 40°C above, the dewpoint temperature.
