ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A process for the removal of nitrogen oxides from exhaust gases while recovering nitric acid is described. When this is done, the exhaust gas is charged with the required quantity of hydrogen peroxide that has been transformed to the gaseous phase and converts the gas mixture to hydrogen nitrate on a catalyst, which is then tapped off for further use or else converted to nitric acid in the manner known per se either by condensation or by washing with water. The process makes it possible to remove NOx at low concentrations of < 2000 ppm, with a degree of efficiency above 90%.
