13 A B S T R A C T The present invention relates to a process for the de- mulsification of oil-in-water emulsions by the addi- tion of cationic polymers, which process is character- ized in that a synthetic organic cationic polymer of a) 5 to 70%-wt. of a monomer of the general formula Image ( I ) wherein R1 is -H or -CH3, Y is -O- or -NH-, R2 is a straight-chain or branched alkylene group with 2 to 6 C-atoms, R3, R4 are -CH3 or -CH2 -CH3, R5 is an alkylene-aromatic residue, X is C1-,CH3SO4-, b) 20 to 95% acrylamide, and c) 0 to 10% of another water-soluble monomer is added to the oil-water emulsion to be demulsified.
