A process for the production of paraxylene from a C8 aromatic hydrocarbon stream using simulated moving bed countercurrent adsorption in combination with an ether desorbent and preferably a Ba X zeolite adsorbent. The adsorbent/ether desorbent system has been found to be particularly good when the water content of the system is carefully controlled. Preferred ether desorbents are diisopropyl ether and methyl tertiary-butyl ether.

L'invention concerne un processus permettant de produire du paraxylène à partir d'un courant d'hydrocarbure aromatique C¿8? à l'aide d'une adsorption à contre-courant d'un lit mobile simulé combinée avec un éther désorbant et, de préférence, un adsorbant Ba X zéolithe. L'ensemble adsorbant/éther désorbant est particulièrement efficace lorsque la teneur en eau dudit ensemble est scrupuleusement vérifiée. Les éthers désorbants préférés selon l'invention sont l'éther diisopropyle et l'éther méthyltertiobutylique.
