ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Concentrate to be smelted is fed into a furnace along its side walls in order to cool the wall surfaces and a mixture of oxygen- enriched air or oxygen, and fuel is fed from the end or vault of the furnace in order to produce molten matte and slag on the floor of the furnace and to remove molten matte, as well as slag and flue gases, from the furnace. At least part of the fuel may consist of concentrate.
