186-P-US03845 ABSTRACT Carboxamides having the structural formula: R1CHR2CH(OR3)NHCR4O wherein: R1 is H, C1-C6 alkyl or aryl; R2 is H, C1-C6 alkyl; R3 is benzyl, C1-C8 alkyl or hydroxyalkyl; and R4 is H, C1-C6 alkyl or aryl; are synthesized by reacting an aldehyde having the structural formula: R1CHR2CHO wherein R1 are R2 are as defined above, with an alcohol having the structural formula: R3OH, wherein R3 is as defined above, and an amide having the structural formula: R4CONH2 wherein R4 is as defined above, in the presence of a strong acid catalyst at a temperature in the range of 0°-200°C.
