186PUS03820 ABSTRACT Secondary formamides having the structural formula: R1CHR2CH(OR3)NHCHO wherein: R1 is H, C1-C6 alkyl or aryl; R2 is H, or C1-C6 alkyl; and R3 is benzyl, C1- C8 alkyl or hydroxyalkyl; are synthesized by reacting an acetal having the structural formula: R1CHR2CH(OR3)2 wherein R1, R2 and R3 are as defined above, with formamide in the presence of a strong acid catalyst at a temperature in the range of 0°-200°C.
