ABSTRACT During the thermal treatment of metallic work pieces in a vacuum oven using gas quenching, one achieves quenching intensities comparable to those achieved in an oil bath if one uses helium, hydrogen, mixtures of these, or mixtures of helium and/or hydrogen with up to 30%-volume inert gas are used as a cooling gas, and the pressure "p" in the oven is adjusted to a value between 1 and 4 MPa and adjusts a value between 10 and 250 m Mpa sec-1 for the gas circulation velocity "v", relative to the product of p ? v.
