L'invention concerne un procédé de traitement d'une huile lourde de pétrole renfermant des asphaltènes dans le but de produire un brut synthétique. Selon l'invention, on divise la charge (ayant été éventuellement soumise au préalable à un dessalage et étêtage ) en au moins une première partie et une seconde partie, on soumet la seconde partie à une hydropyrolyse (viscoréduction) suivie d'un désasphaltage et on remélange ladite première partie avec l'huile désasphaltée obtenue après l'hydropyrolyse et le désasphaltage de la seconde partie. Applications au transport d'huiles lourdes et à la production de bitumes.
