ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Present physical-chemical methods to treat aqueous pulp mill efflu- ent are known to be effective in diminishing undesirable constituents con- tributing to color, toxicity and COD but are effective in removing BOD sub- stances without an additional biological oxidation treatment. By means of this invention, an economic physical-chemical treatment process is provided for diminishing the amount of undesirable constituents contributing to color, COD, toxicity and BOD by contacting the pulp mill effluent with polybasic fibrous material at a pH less than 9.5 and then separating the effluent from the spent fibrous material containing the undesirable constituents. The spent fibrous material can then regenerated in an alkaline solution and refused several times to treat more aqueous pulp mill effluent.
