ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A process for the treatment of calcium tungstate, e.g. scheelite ore or concentrate, comprising the step of contacting calcium tungstate with an excess of hydrogen sulphide at a temperature in the range of about 700 to 1200°C. is disclosed. In a preferred embodiment the resulting mixture of tungsten disulphide and calcium compounds is treated with a saturated aqueous solution of hydrogen sulphide to facilitate separation of the tungsten disulphide. The process provides a method of increasing the tungsten content of scheelite.
