ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A process for the treatment of collagen-containing materinl which comprises treating a collagen-containing ma- terial with a neutral and/or alkaline protease in a treatment medium having 8 pH of from 6.5 to 13 and containing urea and/or guanidine and/or a salt of urea or guanidine, whereby the solubility in hot water of the collagen contained in the said material is increased. The resulting product can then be processed to produce gelatine and similar collagen-containing products. The collagen-containing starting material employed in the above process can be for example bones, skins and hides.
