PROCESS FOR TREATING ACID TAR Abstract of the Disclosure A process of treating acid tar by a tralization and heat treatment comprises the steps of providing oxides, hydroxides or carbonates of alkaline earth metals, such as lime, in a dry form or in the form of an aqueous slurry, which may be concentrated, if de- sired, adding said oxides, hydroxides or carbonates to the tar, whereby a semi-solid to solid reaction product is formed, which is reduced in size, if desired, and is subjected to a heat treatment in a plurality of stages, preferably two stages. The heat treatment comprises in a first stage a dry distillation treatment at 350° to 500° C and in a second stage a combustion of the gaseous products of the dry distillation, to which a starting fuel may have been added, if desired, whereas the solid residue left after the dry distillation treatment is discharged from the dry distillation unit.
