Abstract of the Disclosure A process for utilizing comminuted bark material, containing one or more phenolic compounds, as both an extender and a replacement for a high molecular weight, phenolic adhesive, having a phenol to formaldehyde ratio of about 1:1.2 to about 1:2.5, a solids content of no more than about 45%, a viscosity of no more than about 1500 cps. at 25°C, and a pH of at least about 10.5. The process com- prises the steps of: treating the comminuted bark material with a strong aqueous alkali at about 80° to about 93°C for about one-quarter to about one hour; and subsequently combining the bark and alkali with the phenolic adhesive at approximately ambient temperature. 19
