ABSTRACT This invention relates to a process for pretreating a synthesis gas stream comprising car- bon dioxide and hydrogen and by product sulfur com- pounds in the form of hydrogen sulfide and carbonyl sulfide by first passing the gas stream through an initial scrubbing zone where substantially all of the hydrogen sulfide is removed by a physical sol- vent, but only a part of the carbonyl sulfide is removed. Substantially all of the carbonyl sulfide and carbon dioxide is removed in a second scrubbing zone leaving a gaseous product and a spent solvent containing carbon dioxide and carbonyl sulfide. The solvent from the second zone is desorbed and the resulting gas stream fractionated to produce a carbon dioxide stream substantially free of residual sul- fur compounds alternatively a carbon dioxide stream containing sulfur compounds but free of residual hydrogen.
