ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A mechanical pulp, i.e. a pulp obtained by the mechanical defibration of wood, is treated with a buffer selected from the group consisting of an alkali metal or ammonium salt of phosphoric, carbonic, citric or tartaric acid to a pH of 6-10, whereby, after ageing, the pulp maintains its original hydrofilic property. The amount of buffer added to the pulp is at least 0.2 and preferably 0.5% by weight based on the dry pulp.
