ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE For protecting iron sponge particles against a re- oxidation and/or corrosion a coating comprising CaO and iron or iron oxides as adhesion promotor is applied onto the iron sponge particles. Water is subsequently sprayed onto this coating whereupon a second coating of a mixture of CaO dust and a carbon carrier is applied. This second coat- ing is subsequently humidified with an amount of water less than would be necessary for completely slaking the CaO con- tained within the second coating.
