A process (10) for treating silica-bearing mate- rial comprises maintaining a hot reducing atmosphere in a reaction zone (11), and passing a particulate solid silica-bearing material through the reaction zone (11) in an unsupported manner. The material is allowed to heat up and to react as it passes through the zone (11), thereby to produce a silicon-rich fraction (line 16) and a silicon-poor fraction (line 18).

Procédé (10) de traitement d'un matériau contenant du dioxyde de silicium consistant à maintenir une atmosphère réductrice chaude dans une zone de réaction (11) et à faire passer un matériau solide particulaire contenant du dioxyde de silicium à travers ladite zone (11), sans support. On laisse le matériau se réchauffer et réagir simultanément à son passage à travers la zone (11), ce qui permet d'obtenir une fraction riche en silicium (16) et une fraction pauvre en silicium (18).
