ABSTRACT Impregnated wood and other impregnated cellulose based materials are dried in high boiling drying media, drying oil, under reduced pressure. During the treatment the material is withdrawn from direct contact with the drying medium at several times. The absorption of oil in the materials can thereby be controlled. Materials of different qualities and origins can be dried with good results and the oil absorption does not have to be made dependent on the penetration depth of the impregnating solution. An autoclave for drying of wood according to this process preferably has a rectangular inner cross section and is provided with means for lifting and lowering the materials, preferably a lifting table or frame.
