2097327 9209532 PCTABS00013 A process is provided for treating aqueous waste or groundwater contaminated with nitro-containing organic chemicals to degrade the compound sufficiently to permit disposal of the waste or groundwater, said process comprising the steps of (a) adjusting the pH in the range of ± 3 pH units from the pKa of said compound and (b) treating said waste or groundwater with at least one hydroxyl radical generating agent (e.g. ozone).
