2065244 9102839 PCTABS00003 The process comprises treatment of the pulp with an alkaline xylanase at pH values above 7.5 with subsequent treatment of the thus treated pulp with chlorine with a multiple for active chlorine of 0.20 or less in the first chlorination stage. In this manner the necessary time for the enzymatic pretreatment can be reduced, and furthermore the need for the amount of active chlorine in the first chlorination stage is reduced.
