A process is described for treating polyethylene terephthalate which comprises bringing polyethylene terephthalate having an intrinsic viscosity of at least 0.50 dl/g, an oligomer content of less than 0.50% by weight and a density of 1.38 g/cm3 or more into contact with water. In the water-treated polyethylene terephthalate thus obtained, amounts of oligomers and acetaldehyde formed at the time of molding the polyethylene terephthalate into molded articles are small, and contamination of the mold therewith is substantially avoided. Furthermore, the contents of said molded articles does not change in flavour and fragrance.
