ABSTRACT Low rank coal is subjected to hydrothermal treatment in two stages. In the first stage the coal is heated in the presence of water to a temperature of between 150°C and 300°C at a pressure at least equal to the vapour pressure of water at the temper- ature applied and in the second stage the coal which has been separated from at least part of its liquid water phase is heated to a temperature above 300°C at a pressure below the vapour pressure of water at 300°C. An apparatus for carrying out the process is also described. A high degree or upgrading of low rank coal is achieved without the need of using very high pressures.
