ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A process is provided for the upgrading of solides-contain- ing liquid hydrocarbon oils derived form coal, oil shale and tar sands. The process comprises passing the solids-containing liquid hydrocarbon oil, together with hydrogen, through the void spaces of a fixed catalyst bed wherein the total void volume is within defined critical limits. - 1 -
