A process for removing impurities from a titaniferous material that has been subjected to thermal reduction is disclosed. The process comprises the steps of: (i) subjecting the thermally reduced titaniferous material to a secondary heat treatment to convert it to a leachable form in which impurities present therein are more readily leachable; (ii) cooling the product of step (i); (iii) leaching the cooled heat treated titaniferous material in an aqueous acid solution that is capable of dissolving at least a portion of any impurities contained in the titaniferous material to form a leachate; and (iv) separating the leachate from the titaniferous material.
