This process consists essentially in using a passive microwave radiometric sensor on board a train moving along a railway line to detect obstacles such as bridges, tunnels and buildings near the line, these obstacles presenting, in microwave terms, a strong thermal contrast with the background (ground or sky), the exact locations of these obstacles being stored on board the train. Using the train's odometer, a time window is opened shortly before the estimated location of each obstacle. Comparison with the readings given by the sensor can be used to reset the odometer, thereby significantly increasing its accuracy.
Ce procédé consiste essentiellement à détecter à bord d'un train parcourant une voie ferrée, à l'aide d'un capteur radiométrique hyperfréquences passif, des obstacles, tels que ponts, tunnels et bâtiments proches de la voie, ces obstacles présentant, en hyperfréquences, un fort contraste thermique avec le fond environnant (terre ou ciel), les emplacements exacts de ces obstacles étant mémorisés à bord du train. Grâce à l'odomètre du train, on ouvre une fenêtre temporelle peu avant l'emplacement estimé de chaque obstacle. La comparaison avec les indications fournies par le capteur permettent de recaler l'odomètre, dont la précision est ainsi nettement améliorée.
