Disclosed is a process for acquiring crude trimethylolpropane (TMP) of low reacted color. TMP is generally prepared by the condensation of n-butyraldehyde and formaldehyde in an alkali solution. The mixture is then concentrated and placed through extractor. It has been found that a high concentration of low color TMP is present in the extractor and may be obtained by taking a slip stream of hot organic/water/TMP from the extractor and allowing the mixture to cool and phase separate. Upon separation of the phases, TMP generally having an acid wash color of about or less than 5 GU is recovered from the water phase. Disclosed is use of a single and multistage extractor.

La présente invention concerne un procédé permettant d'obtenir un triméthylolpropane (TMP) brut faiblement coloré par la réaction. Ce TMP s'obtient généralement par condensation de n-butyraldéhyde et de formaldéhyde en solution alcaline. On concentre ensuite le mélange et on le place dans un extracteur. Il est apparu qu'il existe dans l'extracteur une forte concentration de TMP faiblement coloré et que l'on peut l'obtenir en chassant de l'extracteur un courant de matière organique/eau/TMP, et en laissant le mélange refroidir et se séparer en phases. Dès que la séparation des phases est réalisée, on peut récupérer dans la phase aqueuse un TMP présentant une couleur de lavage à l'acide d'environ 5 Unités Gardner au maximum. L'invention concerne également un extracteur à un ou plusieurs étages.
