- 12 - ABSTRACT The gas mixture is contacted in a scrubbing zone with a scrubbing solution which consists mainly of at least one N-alkylsubstituted lactam and contains 1 to 10 % by weight water. Temperatures in the range from 0 to 50 °C are maintained in the scrubbing zone. Ammonia and/or methylamine is fed as a catalyst to the scrubbing zone at a rate of 5 to 100 moles per cubic meter of the scrubbing solution. As a result, at least 50% of the COS fed to the scrubbing zone are reacted by hydrolysis.
