ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE: In order to decrease the energy consumed during an oxidizing hard burning operation, carbonaceous solids are incorporated into the iron ore pellets in such a quantity that the pellets contain Cfi in excess of the quantity which is stoichiometrically required to reduce hematite to magnetite and, in addition, of the quantity required to decompose heat-consuming fluxes. In the burning zone of the traveling grate on which these pellets are burned, hot gases under a pressure of 5 to 20 millibars below atmospheric pressure are passed through the pellet bed.
